Technical Theatre Portfolio – Molly Lewis (JUNIOR); After her interviews concluded, several colleges including Ball State, Purdue, IU, and UIndy aggressively sought more attention and information from Molly and her student career here.  We had trouble tearing her away from the college representatives so that she could compete in the Technical Olympics!

All of the students from Warren Central who attended the state conference represented both Warren Central and the MSD of Warren Township well!  They are yet another shining example of the quality and integrity of our students, our schools, and the high level of education offered in Warren Township.  Don’t be surprised if you see all of these names in lights in the future!  Congratulations!

2010 Technical Theater

State Champions

This past weekend, our technical theatre students attended the annual Indiana State Thespian Conference at Vincennes University presented by the International Thespian Society.  This conference consisted of 25 high schools and over 700 students from across the state of Indiana!  During the weekend students participated in theatre workshops, met with dozens of colleges, watched other high school productions, mingled with fellow theatre students, and competed in acting and technical theatre competitions.  One competition in particular was the highlight of our weekend.

The Technical Theatre Olympics is THE state competition for technical theatre students.  44 students from 12 different schools (Including 4 students from Warren Central) competed this year.  The team competed against many intimidating teams such as Merrillville High School, Carmel High School, and Logansport HS.  The competition included five separate events that each student had to compete in separately.  These events tested the students endurance, knowledge of technical theatre, and agility.  These events are timed, calculated at the end of the competition, and added up to give each team a final time score.  For the past 5 years Carmel High School has placed 1st in the Technical Theatre Olympics while Warren Central remained absent from the conference during that time.  This year we returned after our 5 year hiatus to bring the honor back to Warren Central High School.  After a rigorous afternoon of competition the games were over.  Saturday evening it was announced that Warren Central High School finished 1st  in the Technical Theatre Olympics making us the new 2010 Technical Theatre State Champions.   Our trophy is a brand new ETC Source 4 Ellipsoidal.  This “trophy” is a lighting instrument that is a top of the line hanging spot light that will be put to great use in our different theatre spaces.

The students on the team were Seniors Kirsten Jackley, Kevin Martin, Tyler Hinojosa, and Junior Jessica Newman.  In addition to our prestigious state championship title, Kirsten Jackely placed 3rd in the Lighting competition and Jessica Newman placed 4th.  Kevin Martin placed 4th in the Stage Knot competition. These students’ times were milliseconds away from placing 1st in the individual competitions.  All of the students who participated are the most talented, gifted, honorable, and respected students in our department.  They truly bring a high level of prestige and honor back to WCHS with this State Championship!  We are so grateful for all of the support MSDWT has given WCHS Theatre, the Warren Performing Arts Center, and all of the WCHS Performing Arts.  We look forward to continuing our legacy of high quality technical theatre, performance theatre, and performing arts for years to come.

Costume Designer Visits WCHS Theatre

Theatre students in the Warren Central High School Performing Arts Department got a glimpse into the world of professional theatre careers with a visit from a local expert.  Nikki Maritch, Costume Shop Manager at the Indiana Repertory Theatre, shared stories and advice with theatre classes all day Thursday, January 28.  “Having Nikki here was an awesome capstone to the costuming projects that our beginning and intermediate theatre students just finished,” says theatre teacher Becky Schlomann.  “As head of costuming at Indiana’s premiere professional, nonprofit theatre, Nikki brought a real-world perspective to our class.  Our students have just been through the costume design and construction process, and that’s what Nikki does every day.  It was neat for them to compare their work to hers.  Opportunities like this help our students see that the arts can be a viable career option.”  Education and student outreach are central to the Indiana Repertory Theatre’s mission.  Learn more at www.irtlive.com .
