Warren Central Jazz Ensemble

Participates in 2011 Dimensions in Jazz

On Saturday, March 5, the Warren Central Jazz Ensemble travelled to Ball State University to participate in the 2011 Dimensions in Jazz festival.  This year marks the Warren band’s third consecutive year of participation.  After an early morning trip, the jazz ensemble performed in Ball State’s Pruis Hall, followed immediately by a clinic with one of the judges, Indianapolis-based trombone player Rich Dole.  The afternoon schedule called for listening to other high school jazz bands perform and going to clinics, including an improvisation clinic presented by Jarrard Harris (Columbia College of Chicago)  and a brass clinic presented by Ball State’s Director of Jazz Studies, Mark Buselli.  The day concluded with a concert by Ball State’s top jazz ensemble and their featured guest artist, drummer Mike Clark.

Visits Butler University

On April 21, the Warren Central Jazz Ensemble participated in a side-by-side rehearsal with one of the jazz ensembles from Butler University Jazz Ensemble members had the opportunity to listen to the Butler band play, then sit alongside them as Butler’s Director of Jazz Studies Dr. Matt Pivec rehearsed the combined group.  Warren students came away from the experience having learned a great deal about jazz style and improvisation.  We are very appreciative to Dr. Pivec and the Butler students for hosting and working with us, and we look forward to collaborating again in the future.

The final Warren Central Jazz Ensemble performance of the school year will take place on Tuesday, May 11, at 7:00 PM in the Warren PAC.  This concert is free of charge and will feature the Warren Township Middle School Jazz Ensemble as well as an extended set by the High School Jazz Ensemble.  We hope to see you there!
