Metropolitan School District of Warren Township, located on the east side of Indianapolis, is an educational institution that can trace its beginnings in Indianapolis back more than a century. Warren Central High School was built in 1924 to consolidate the overcrowded Shadeland and Cumberland Junior-Senior High Schools. The Warren Performing Arts Center was built in 1983, adding over 116,000 square feet of creative, technical and rehearsal space; this space, along with the high school and career center, totals almost one million square feet. The township is comprised of an early learning center, 9 elementary schools, three intermediate academies, three middle schools, one high school, an alternative school and a career center serving approximately 11,500 students.
Since 1983 Warren Central High School has been officially recognized as a “National School of Excellence” and as an Indiana Blue Ribbon School. Individual students consistently win awards in academic and performance competitions, and championship-caliber music programs and athletic teams have been the rule, not the exception. The music program has earned Grammy Signature Schools Semi-Finalist recognition 9 times and was honored as a Grammy Signature School in 1999. Warren Central music ensembles have made approximately 30 appearances at the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) State Finals since the 1980s.
